At Risk Driver Program
Program Purpose
The At Risk Driver Program will provide families and caregivers with a program that helps to facilitate the safe return of the cognitively impaired person whose license has been revoked yet continues to drive. The ultimate purpose of the program is to improve road safety for all members of the community.
Program Goals
- Reduce the incidence of cognitively impaired drivers who continue to drive
- Provide an option for family members and caregivers who are concerned about the person who continues to drive
- Provide Sault Ste. Marie Police Services with necessary information to assist cognitively impaired drivers
- Increase awareness of families and caregivers of the impact that dementia has on driving ability
- Increase community awareness of dementia and driving issues
Program Partners
The At Risk Driver Program was made possible through the collaboration of the members of the Dementia Care Network Algoma and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services.
The program will be jointly administered by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District.
Procedure
Agencies wishing to make a referral to the program must complete the Registration Form and fax it to the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District at 705-256-6777. Prior to faxing the form, a caregiver or family member of the cognitively impaired person will be required to complete the majority of fields in the form and sign where indicated. Family members must be made aware of the implications of registration in the At Risk Driver Program as noted in the brochure.
